Constructing Relationships between Journalist and Viewers :How using Social Media is a Key Component.

As Social Media takes the world by storm, journalists are learning how to use it to their advantage. Journalists now have the ability to provide valuable information simultaneously across a variety of platforms at the click of a button. Just years ago this was not possible , opening the door to the rapid spread of news .

Journalism has transformed into a multifaceted field where not only journalist have a chance to use your voices; but the audience has the opportunity to speak out as well. Social media connects the every day viewer to journalists, which in return helps the journalist get a closer look at what is going on within the world. The overall goal is to get viewers to view the journalist as a go to source for credible information.

Interaction between the two is key. Engaging in conversation, responding to comments and also looking to viewers for their guidance in the scope of new stories helps to build this bond. Interactions between audience and the journalist offer an opportunity to form a relationship. Journalists should also give an inside look into their lives as well ,making it personal but also professional ,letting viewers see both aspects of their lives . This provides trust and comfortably where viewers feel they have the ability to offer insight and feedback .

Courtney Fisher , a reporter for ABC 13 in Houston uses Twitter as a key tool to engage with her audience . As Hurricane Laura salvaged the Louisiana/Texas border ,Fisher used the video and photo sharing feature on Twitter to share behind-the-scenes footage of the damage swept across the area. Fischer shared the difficulty of navigating through down power lines and debris littered streets between live the broadcast on ABC13 .

Fisher also used her Twitter platform to help connect displaced survivors with family members across the viewing area.This is a great example of journalists using their platform to spark engagement and outreach .

Anthony Adornato’sMobile and Social Media Journalism : A Practical Guide,” explains that “Mobile devices and social media allow journalists to strengthen their connections with the public and ultimately better serve them.” It is vital in this era to connect with consumers on and off the screen .
